Greenbelt, MD – January 2025
GAMA-1 Technologies is proud to announce our upcoming presentation at the American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) 105th Annual Meeting, taking place from January 12–16, 2025, in New Orleans, LA, and online. Our presentation, titled “Lessons Learned Migrating Science Algorithms from NESDIS/OSPO On-Premise to NCCF,” for the 15th Conference on Transition of Research to Operations (15R2O) and will highlight critical insights gained from our work in supporting NOAA’s cloud migration initiatives.
Presentation Details:
- Session Title: Special Look-Ahead Topics in Transition of Research to Operations (R2O)
- Date: Thursday, January 16, 2025
- Session Start Time: 1:45 PM (Central)
- Presentation Time: 2:30 PM (Central)
- Paper Number: 15D.4
- Location: Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, LA, and online
Abstract Overview:
The presentation, co-authored by GAMA-1’s Priyanka Roy and Letitia Soulliard, as well as , NESDIS’ Walter Wolf, will explore the challenges and triumphs of migrating NOAA Unique Products from on-premise servers to the AWS-based NESDIS Common Cloud Framework (NCCF). Over a span of three and a half years, NOAA’s Algorithm Scientific Software and System Transition Team (ASSISTT) has transitioned 83 science algorithms (SAs) from legacy systems and the NESDIS Data Exploitation (NDE) servers into standardized, containerized packages for deployment in the cloud.
Key topics covered in the presentation include:
- The development and implementation of the Standard for Cloud Containerized Algorithm Packages (CCAPs) to guide delivery and transition processes.
- Adoption of Agile methodologies to streamline software development and migration efforts.
- Overcoming significant challenges, including limited access to operational systems and the necessity of delivering iterative patches.
The lessons learned from these efforts emphasize the importance of robust communication, effective feedback loops, and close collaboration with stakeholders. These practices have enabled the successful implementation of 29 NDE SAs and 20 legacy SAs to date, with continued efforts to achieve full migration by the end of FY 2025.
Why This Matters:
Cloud migration is a cornerstone of NOAA’s digital transformation strategy, enabling more efficient, scalable, and sustainable operations. GAMA-1 Technologies, in collaboration with NESDIS/OSPO, is proud to support these advancements, ensuring NOAA’s data products remain accessible and reliable for a wide range of users.
We invite AMS in person and on-line attendees to join us for this insightful session and learn how lessons from this complex migration process can inform future research-to-operations (R2O) transitions across the meteorological and environmental sciences community.
