GAMA-1 to Present Innovations in FAIR Data and Wildfire Forecasting at AMS 2025

Greenbelt, MD – November 2024

GAMA-1 Technologies is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Conference in January. As a trusted partner to NOAA, GAMA-1 continues to drive innovation in environmental science and data services. This year, we will be presenting advancements in wildfire detection and forecasting, addressing one of the most pressing global challenges today.

Presentation Details:

  • Session Title: FAIR and Open Data and Software within the Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences to Support Transparent, Reusable, and Efficient Research and Operations II
  • Date: Monday, January 13, 2025
  • Session Start Time: 10:45 AM (Central)
  • Presentation Time: 11:45 AM (Central)
  • Paper Number: 2B.5

Abstract Overview: Wildfire Detection and Forecasting for a Changing Climate

Wildfires are among the most destructive natural disasters, impacting ecosystems, human lives, property, and air quality on a global scale. With climate change contributing to rising temperatures, reduced snowpack, and more frequent droughts, the severity of wildfires has intensified, making early detection and accurate forecasting more crucial than ever.

NOAA, as the nation’s leading environmental science agency, plays a pivotal role in providing critical forecasts and early warning systems, monitoring temperature, precipitation, and soil moisture across the United States. To address the growing threat of wildfires and manage increasing volumes and diverse sources of data, NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) has joined forces with the University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center’s (SSEC) Next Generation Fire System (NGFS).

Building the Future of Fire Detection and Data Access

Together, NOAA/NESDIS and SSEC are developing a responsive, high-performance web portal designed to provide rapid access to critical wildfire data, including space- and ground-based observations, models, warnings, and forecasts. This portal will serve diverse user communities, such as scientific researchers, weather forecasters, emergency responders, educators, policy makers, citizen scientists, and the general public.

Using scalable, cloud-based technologies, the team is embracing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles and promoting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) in data dissemination. The system leverages the latest API specifications from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and uses cutting-edge, cloud-optimized data formats like Zarr and Cloud Optimized Geotiff (COG) to create reusable data access services. These services will power NOAA’s web-based user interfaces, GIS clients, and user-developed software.

Empowering Wildland Fire Communities

In our presentation at the AMS conference, GAMA-1 and NOAA will discuss the growing needs of wildland fire communities and highlight progress toward a fully operational next-generation fire detection and data access system. This system will enable future scientific endeavors and enhance NOAA’s ability to protect lives, property, and the environment from the devastating impacts of wildfires.

Mark your calendars and join us on January 13, 2025, at 11:45 AM (Central) for our session to learn more about this important work!
